More Than Just A Pretty Dress - Our Story
Helping Women Help Themselves, One Stitch at a Time
DressCodeZanzibar is a women-led social enterprise rooted in Zanzibar, Tanzania—creating thoughtfully made pieces that connect traditional craftsmanship with a global audience.
Handmade with Purpose. Designed with Meaning.
Each garment and textile is crafted using East African kanga and kitenge fabrics, often featuring Swahili proverbs—subtle expressions of culture, identity, and story. No two pieces are exactly alike. Every item reflects the hands that made it: skilled artisans whose work carries both heritage and intention.
A Different Kind of Production
DressCodeZanzibar operates at the intersection of craftsmanship and access—where design meets opportunity.
We work directly with women artisans to create high-quality, small-batch collections that prioritize: • Attention to detail • Thoughtful design • Consistent, paid work
This is not mass production. It is a slower, more intentional approach, where each piece holds value beyond the product itself.
Why It Matters
Zanzibar is known for its beauty and global tourism. Yet for many women, access to consistent, year-round income remains limited. DressCodeZanzibar bridges this gap by connecting skilled artisans to markets beyond the island - transforming craftsmanship into sustainable livelihood. Since launching, DressCodeZanzibar has supported 10+ artisans with income-generating work, with products sold locally and internationally through boutiques, hotels, and online platforms. We have also connected artisans to additional employment opportunities to support ongoing income and long-term stability.
Our Story
While volunteering in Tilonia, India, in 2020, founder Julie Heinz was sent to Zanzibar, Tanzania, to support a communications project with Barefoot College International. When the world paused, she stayed, spending nearly two years living and working within the community.
It was there she met a group of talented seamstresses whose skill and creativity stood in contrast to the limited opportunities available to them. In 2021, DressCodeZanzibar was born.
What began as a small pilot quickly evolved into a growing collection - sold in boutiques, hotels, and internationally through online platforms.
With a background in global development and education—including work with CARE, The ONE Campaign, and national initiatives during the Obama Administration—Julie brought a foundation in expanding access to opportunity. In Zanzibar, that work became tangible—translating experience into a locally rooted model connecting skills, training, and market access.
Julie continued her work in Zanzibar through 2025, deepening relationships and building the foundation of DressCodeZanzibar on the ground.
In returning to the United States, she began focusing on the next phase of the model—positioning the work within a market where demand for thoughtfully made, globally sourced goods is strong, yet access for many artisans remains limited. This transition has allowed DressCodeZanzibar to expand its reach—bridging craftsmanship and market in a more sustainable and scalable way.
Looking Forward
Today, the work continues to evolve. Now based in the United States, Julie is focused on building a more sustainable, partnership-driven model—expanding relationships with retailers and collaborators who value craftsmanship, story, and impact. We are expanding to include products from other women-led initiatives, creating a shared platform for market access and growth.
What Makes Our Work Different
We prioritize long-term relationships over one-time production. We focus on small-batch, high-quality pieces rather than mass production. We work directly with artisans and partners to ensure consistency, skill development, and fair, paid work.
As the model grows, we are building a platform that connects multiple women-led initiatives to sustainable markets—creating opportunity beyond a single product or collection.
For Partner Organizations
We collaborate with women-led organizations and artisan groups seeking thoughtful entry into the U.S. market. If you are producing high-quality, handcrafted goods and looking for a partner to help position, present, and connect your products to customers and retailers, we welcome the opportunity to work together.
